Hamid

Lands that once were left,

of people who I left,

though not left behind,

now emerge out of their

temporary abodes.

Hamid kept me lingering,

on his covered horse.

The horse is a stand-in

for a country,

and he a stand-in

for a lover.

There must be a dictum about

a place’s space in us,

and how when we are there

it is undervalued;

and only afterwards

are we able to see it.
